SUMMARY:Tour: Robert M. Beam Power Plant | WMU
DESCRIPTION:At the time the 1925 era power plant transferred to Western Michigan University\, it was a 100 percent coal-fired facility with 40 to 50-year-old boilers that had become unreliable and environmentally non-compliant. Many of us drive past the unmarked\, gated entrance off Stadium Drive\, but few realize the building behind there provides power for all of WMU campus and more.\n Its current use is an efficient co-generation  power distribution providing steam heat\, electricity and cooling production for the campus of Western Michigan University. As complex as the plant is\, it is only staffed by 17 people year-round\, with some being certified welders and electricians. The plant also offers a unique on-the-job training program for trades people. \nSpeaker and tour: Matt Cronkhite \nGather: 5:30pm – must use gated entrance off Stadium Drive \nWe will have dinner first\, then have the tour at 6:30 \nTo pay $10 for dinner by credit card\, use add to cart button below: \n\n\nRegistration | Evenbrite \n  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:2018 Michigan Infrastructure Report
DESCRIPTION:  \n5:30 -5:45:  Networking\n5:45-6:00: Chapter Officer Installation\n6:00 – 6:30: Presentation by Myndi Bacon\, ASCE MI Section Past President and NAWIC member\nRegister on Eventbrite \nLink to the report HERE \nSummary of Presentation:\nInfrastructure includes fundamental facilities and systems necessary for Michigan’s economy to function. Roads\, bridges\, schools\, water and sewer systems\, dams\, railways\, and energy systems are categories of infrastructure that directly affect our ability to live\, work and play. Quality infrastructure allows Michigan to be a front-runner in research & development\, manufacturing\, farming\, and tourism. Our transportation system gets people to work every day or up north for weekends. Water systems deliver clean drinking water to our homes\, communities\, and businesses. School buildings provide a safe place for our children to learn. Stormwater and wastewater treatment systems protect our neighborhoods from floods\, and our lakes\, rivers\, and beaches from contamination. \nToday\, Michigan’s infrastructure is old and outdated. Michigan’s economic downturn resulted in underinvestment in maintenance and repairs. We’re now faced with pothole-ridden roads\, bridges propped with temporary supports\, sinkholes destroying homes and closed beaches. The 21st Century Infrastructure Commission determined an additional $4 billion annually is needed to maintain our infrastructure. Michigan must support innovative policies leading to cleaner water\, smoother highways\, and a safe environment that will attract business and improve our quality of life. \nThe 2018 ASCE Michigan Report Card is a simple tool used to help residents\, businesses\, and policymakers understand the state of Michigan’s infrastructure. This information helps start the conversation about how to improve our poor infrastructure. \nABOUT\nEstablished in 1916\, the American Society of Civil Engineers Michigan Section is one of the largest and most active Sections maintaining over 2\,500 members. There are 6 active Branches in Michigan including the Northwest\, Western\, Saginaw Valley\, Southwest\, Lansing/Jackson\, and Southeast. Civil Engineers in Michigan are encouraged to join ASCE to develop leadership skills\, enhance their knowledge of the latest technology and engineering practices\, and to network with other civil engineering professionals. \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Tour: The Milton - Preserving the Image of Battle Creek
DESCRIPTION:More information is coming soon about this active construction tour – February 19!\n \nFormerly known as The Heritage Building in recent years\, The Milton is a 19-story mixed-use redevelopment project in downtown Battle Creek. The Milton luxury apartments are combined with retail and business space. Constructed in 1931 as the Old Merchants National Bank\, the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the last projects designed by Chicago architectural firm Weary and Alford. \nOur own NAWIC member\, Kate Shields\, a project estimator with glazing contractor Blackberry Systems in Kalamazoo\, worked on the project. She says\, “The Milton has been one of our most comprehensive restoration and replication projects that we have undertaken in the past 30 years. The 90-year-old project required us to not only restore historic metals\, decorative skylights\, and the original historic storefront\, but the steel windows also had to be completely replaced due to the poor condition they were in. The original steel windows had a unique design of a two-lite casement over a lower fixed transom with narrow stile sightlines\, posing a challenge to replicate.”  \nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print
